My name is Adrian, and I am the owner and skipper of the Chloe Jay. My father ran fishing charters out of Union Hall since the early 90s, and I joined him back in 2012.
I have been around the sea and involved with boats and sailing my whole life, but I tired of fishing and felt the coast had much more to offer. So here we are — a new goal, a new chapter, and renewed enthusiasm.
May and June usually brings basking sharks, minke whales, calming seas and lengthening days.
July and August bring warming waters, shoals of Mackerel, long days of opportunity and maybe a swim in the sea, not to mind busy beaches and attractions and a way to escape it all.
September, October and November bring us an ocean bursting to life, baitballs forming under clouds of birds, finwhales, humpbacks and bluefin tuna in feeding frenzys. Not to mention the most atmospheric sunrises and sunsets and if the weather cooperates it doesn’t get any better.
Minke whales, common dolphins, seals and harbour porpoises are present throughout the season and humpbacks can put on a show at any point.
The coastline is not to be forgotten either. From cliffs covered in gulls, guillemots, razorbills, shags and cormorants drying their wings — gannets and shearwaters swooping and diving.
Ruined castles and lookouts and lighthouses under a veil of mist or a burning sunset, sometimes simply floating in a mirage. Maybe just an ocean swell crashing on the back of an island the landlubbers would never see.
I’ve seen it a thousand times but its beauty is beholden.
